SUMMARY:Fresh Brew: In Conversation with Mike Pitler
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER AIA Member: $10 | General: $15 | Student: $5 \nJoin us as we kick off the 2021 "Fresh Brew" series in conversation with Mike Pitler\, Principal with workshop1. Along with William Mollard\, Mike leads this firm that takes a vertically-integrated approach to development (developer and architect- or owner and builder). \nIn the San Francisco Bay Area where the design\, entitlement and construction processes are rife with complexity\, we'll speak to Mike about his firm’s approach to playing the all-encompassing roles and responsibilities of architect-developer-builder-financer and why they continue to embrace this business model. We will explore locating projects in walkable\, urban neighborhoods\, and why community involvement is an important component to workshop1’s project successes and the success of building community. \nCo-presented by AIASF and the Center for Architecture + Design in collaboration with AIASF's Housing Committee. \n\n“With an intentional and direct approach to community involvement\, their process is worth a closer look. “In our experience the community involvement informs our design in subtle and significant ways…I am convinced that it has always led to a better project.” \n\n\nSpeakers\nMike Pitler\, Principal\, workshop1 \nMike hails from the midwest having spent his childhood first in Chicago and later in St. Louis. It was the Chicago skyline that sparked his fascination with Architecture. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, he high-tailed it out west to pursue his Master's of Architecture degree at the University of California\, Berkeley. Graduating in the midst of the dot-com boom in the late '90s\, Mike honed his skills working for some notable Bay Area architects. In 2006\, he launched a solo practice focused on architecture and real estate development. Three years later\, Mike and long-time friend\, Will\, merged their solo practices into workshop1 affording them the opportunity to lead a soup-to-nuts practice focused on real estate development\, architecture and brokerage. When not plugged into his headphones at the office\, Mike enjoys spending time with his wife and two boys romping around the Oakland Hills — and sometimes beyond. \n\n(Moderator) Lise de Vito \nDesign Industry Relations and Strategy\, Henrybuilt; Owner\, Zack | de Vito Architecture + Construction\n\n\nLise de Vito's passion for design\, architecture and creative acts began early in life\, influenced by a family of architects\, industrial designers and artists. Evident in the graphic quality of her work is a strong ability to innovate. Lise’s professional experience covers a diverse range of project types including residential\, retail and commercial.  The design of award winning\, urban-infill residential development work is a constant thread throughout Lise's professional focus; vertically integrated projects from land acquisition to design|build brought to market.  Lise received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture from Rhode Island School of Design\, after which she worked for firms on the East and West Coast before joining Jim Zack to form Zack | de Vito Architecture + Construction. Although Lise remains an owner of ZdV\, she joined Henrybuilt to bring her industry knowledge and diverse trade relationships to act in a strategic\, forward facing role for the company.\n\nFresh Brew is a series of online morning conversations covering a variety of topics about all things architecture and design. Fresh Brew aims to provide the general public and industry professionals with engaging dialogue and to provide a space for inspiration during these challenging times.
