https://archive.aiasf.org/member-services/knowledge-communities/health-and-science/

This presentation delves into the intersection of biotech and architecture as embodied by Nexus; a cutting-edge building situated in South San Francisco's biotech hub. Featured artist Marc Northstar is also the creator of Nano, approaches the form of abstract process rather than a final form and will discuss how his artwork reflects the innovative applications of biotechnology. Zandra Fernandez Bucheli, Construction Administrator at FLAD Architects, will moderate this talk which will explain how the building's advanced architecture was designed to complement Nano and create a cohesive biotech culture. The program will also explore the sustainability and AI aspects behind-the-scenes, highlighting how these cutting-edge technologies are shaping the future of biotech and architecture. This conversation celebrates the power of creativity and innovation in shaping a sustainable and technologically advanced world.

Learning Objectives (2 LU Pending)

1 - South San Francisco Birth of Biotech. The biotechnology revolution shaped the recent history the Bay Area and set a new direction for life sciences research. This session will trace developments from this pivotal event to the current White House Bio Tech and Bio Manufacturing Initiative.

2 - Artificial Intelligence & art. The artist will discuss how Artificial Intelligence played a role in the creation of Nano, an 18x43 ft exterior canvas, by assisting him in implementing a sustainable approach.

3 - Nano influenced by biotech-architecture. The artist will explore the intersection of architecture and art and how the forms and language of architecture influenced the creation of Nano. Drawing on over 15 years of experience, the artist approached the creation of Nano as a process rather than a final work, a journey that is reflected in the artwork's title: Nano.

4 - Design for Discovery. Research environments include both factors that guide all design and the highly specialized needs of a unique building type. We will review organizing principles, aesthetic goals, infrastructure needs, with special focus on research in high & low-rise buildings.
