This tour provides a firsthand look into the perspectives of the Owner, Architect, and Landscape Architect, highlighting the robust collaboration within the team at San Francisco's new waterfront neighborhood. Notably featured in Architectural Record in 2023, the tour centers on the integration with Building 12. The tour leaders —Owner, Architect, and Landscape Architect — will delve into the project, shedding light on the collaborative process that drove the achievement of design and resiliency goals for the Pier 70 neighborhood.

As we walk around the site and into Building 12 attendees will hear firsthand about the site’s important history and the vision for its future; the project’s strategy for meeting our resiliency goals including addressing sea level rise (which included raising the site grades and lifting Building 12 ten feet); and the extensive community outreach program that laid the groundwork for this emerging neighborhood along the San Francisco waterfront.

Presented by AIASF in collaboration with the Center for Architecture + Design, AIASF international Practice and AIASF Mentorship Knowledge Communities, ASLA Northern California and led by the Owner, Architect and Landscape Architect representatives involved in the design and construction.

Learning Objectives

1 - Accessibility resolutions at grade changes: As we walk around Pier 70 and into the building, the design team will discuss how the team worked together to translate what was a dilapidated and potentially dangerous area into one that welcomes all members of the community, showcasing the historic structures while translating Pier 70 into a vibrant new neighborhood. In particular the design collaboration between architect and landscape architect at accessible points of entry requested by owner and stakeholders.

2 - Zero net carbon initiative measures taken: Attendees will learn about the challenges of opening up the envelope of Building 12 both thermally and aesthetically to create a connection to the waterfront. To meet our resiliency goals, the design team conducted an analysis of the existing envelope using energy modeling tools to design an efficient wall assembly and envelope.

3 - Resiliency measure regarding sea level rise: We will discuss the project’s resiliency strategies, including adaptive reuse and addressing sea level rise. Adaptive reuse helps to reduce our carbon impact and preserves a local sense of place. To confront sea level rise, the team raised the site grades and lifted Building 12 ten feet, which presented unique challenges for the project and the reuse of this historic structure.

4- International waterfront design context: Our tour will highlight how Building 12’s successful entitlement and design strategy along with a strong public-private partnership, used best practices for community outreach and urban development. With international design principles, firms, stakeholders and perspective, this local project also demonstrates international participation and aspirations in the design and development process.

5- Historic brownfield development with public access and safety perspective: Attendees will get to know the importance of the history of the Pier 70 site and its modern interpretation as a walkable and resilient new neighborhood that will provide an important connection to the Bay, parks, and trails. Discussion will health safety and welfare upgrades planned for the waterfront site.
